Following the coordinated attacks on April 25, 2026, which were claimed by the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) and the Front de Libération de l’Azawad (FLA), Mali has undertaken a sweeping overhaul of its military leadership. These assaults resulted in the loss of former Defence Minister, General Sadio Camara, among other casualties.
As outlined in a special edition of the Official Gazette released on May 29, the reshuffle saw several high-ranking officers reassigned to critical positions within the Malian Armed Forces and the unified command of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
Key appointments reshaping Mali’s defence structure
Brigadier General Makan Alassane Diarra has been entrusted with leading the AES unified force, succeeding General Daouda Traoré. His appointment follows a track record of leadership in military operations across eastern Mali, where his strategic insights proved instrumental in countering insurgent threats.
To fill the void he leaves behind at the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Brigadier General Mamadou Massaoulé Samaké has been elevated to the role. Previously serving as a strategic advisor, General Samaké brings a fresh perspective to operational planning. Meanwhile, Colonel-Major Yacouba Sanogo has been designated as the new strategic advisor to the General Staff, further reinforcing the leadership’s analytical capabilities.
Operational command realigned to counter evolving threats
The restructuring extends to the battlefield, with Colonel-Major Karim Traoré assuming command of the Eastern Theatre, Colonel-Major Didier Dembélé taking charge of the Southern Theatre, and Colonel Issa Bagayoko overseeing the Central Theatre. These adjustments aim to enhance responsiveness and tactical coordination in regions most affected by militant activities.
In a parallel move, President of the Transition, General Assimi Goïta, has taken direct oversight of the Defence portfolio, while General Oumar Diarra has been named as the Minister Delegate with responsibility for this critical sector. These decisions reflect Bamako’s commitment to tightening control over security operations and fostering seamless collaboration between national forces and the AES alliance.
