Malian forces eliminate senior JNIM commander in drone operation

Malian armed forces have confirmed the elimination of a high-ranking jihadist figure associated with the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) in central Mali. This significant development follows the recent introduction of unprecedented reward incentives targeting wanted armed group leaders.

Mali : l’armée annonce avoir neutralisé un chef jihadiste clé du JNIM lors d’une frappe de drone

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) disclosed on Sunday, June 14, that a prominent jihadist commander, identified as a key member of the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims, had been successfully neutralized.

An official statement from the General Staff indicated that the individual, known by the aliases Oumar Kéréna, Farouk, and Housseini Mawdo, perished during a precision drone strike conducted on June 3rd. The operation took place in Mougnan, a community approximately forty kilometers from Djenné, situated in the nation’s central region.

Malian authorities characterized him as a former operative of the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO), who, over time, ascended to an influential leadership position within various jihadist factions active across Mali and the broader West Africa region.

A central figure in jihadist networks

According to military reports, the neutralized commander previously held command responsibilities in the Serma area. Subsequently, he oversaw numerous armed activities spanning several sectors within the Sikasso and Koutiala regions, extending into certain border areas of neighboring Burkina Faso.

The General Staff assessed his role as pivotal in coordinating networks aligned with JNIM, which stands as the primary jihadist coalition operating throughout the Sahel and maintains ties to Al-Qaïda.

Bamako intensifies security strategy

This announcement follows closely on the heels of an extraordinary decision by Malian authorities. On June 4th, the government implemented a financial reward system, offering up to two billion CFA francs for actionable intelligence leading to the location or apprehension of several high-profile armed and terrorist group leaders.

Notably, the largest bounty specifically targets Iyad Ag Ghali, widely regarded as the nation’s most wanted individual.

This recent operation underscores Bamako’s escalating military pressure against jihadist entities. It unfolds amidst a resurgence of armed assaults and persistent security challenges impacting various regions across Mali and the wider Sahel.
