Morocco reaffirmed its commitment to a political solution for Libya’s crisis during a session of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. Ambassador Mohamed Arrouchi, Morocco’s permanent representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, underlined the kingdom’s support for national reconciliation and dialogue initiatives among Libyan factions.
Arrouchi stressed that the Skhirat Agreement, signed on December 17, 2015 under UN auspices, remains a key framework for achieving a lasting settlement. He also highlighted the need to preserve Libya’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The ambassador acknowledged the African Union’s efforts to promote peace, security and stability across the continent, particularly its work toward a political resolution in Libya. He recalled recent meetings in Tripoli and Zenten that led to a January 7, 2026 accord between representatives of the Government of National Unity and the government based in eastern Libya.
Morocco has played a mediating role by bringing Libyan parties closer together, Arrouchi explained. These initiatives respect international legality, the Skhirat Agreement’s conclusions and the understandings reached in Bouznika. The kingdom reiterated the importance of continuing political efforts and avoiding military options.
