Dr Jean Baptiste Nikiema officially begins role as OMS resident representative in Niger

The Republic of Niger has welcomed its new World Health Organization (OMS) resident representative. Dr Jean Baptiste Nikiema, a seasoned public health expert and diplomat, officially presented his credentials to Niger’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Bakary Yaou Sangaré, in a ceremony held in Niamey.

Dr. Nikiema praised Niger’s leadership in advancing population health, particularly its achievements in child vaccination coverage, maternal and perinatal mortality reduction, onchocerciasis elimination, and epidemic response.

The discussion also addressed the impact of financial constraints on OMS operations. Dr. Nikiema acknowledged the Nigerien government’s support through the Ministry of Health and recognized the country’s efforts in resource mobilization, digital health transformation, and telemedicine development. He reaffirmed his commitment to working within Niger’s national sovereignty and strategic priorities to enhance health and well-being across the country.

Dr. Nikiema’s extensive public health expertise

Dr. Jean Baptiste Nikiema brings over three decades of experience in public health and health diplomacy to his new role. His expertise spans:

  • New therapeutic approaches (preclinical and clinical research in molecular biology, phytochemistry, pharmacognosy, pharmacology, and medicinal plants)

His career includes significant national and international roles, such as:

  • Director General of Pharmacy, Medicines, and Laboratories in Burkina Faso
  • University department head
  • Chairman of the Muraz Center Board
  • OMS Regional Advisor for Medicines and Health Products in Africa
  • Deputy OMS Representative in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Dr. Nikiema has played a pivotal role in managing health crises related to epidemics, mass population displacements, and natural disasters.

Major achievements in African health

His notable contributions include:

  • Establishment of the African Medicines Agency
  • Promotion of local medicine and health product manufacturing
  • Strengthening pharmaceutical regulatory systems
  • Coordinating pooled procurement for small African island states, generating significant cost savings

Additionally, Dr. Nikiema has mentored over 50 PhD candidates in pharmacy and medicine, as well as 10 public health master’s students. He has authored or co-authored more than 50 scientific publications in international journals, advancing knowledge in health policy, pharmacology, and health system resilience.
