The OGC Nice faces a critical moment as the French Football Federation (FFF) upholds its decision to play the Ligue 1 playoff return against AS Saint-Étienne behind closed doors. This sanction follows unrest during the team’s recent match against FC Metz on May 17, which has now escalated into a severe penalty for the club.

The FFF’s Superior Appeals Committee has not only confirmed the initial closure sanction but has also intensified it. The Nice-based club will now play two full matches without spectators, with a third match under partial closure, along with a suspended point deduction for the 2026/2027 season.

OGC Nice condemns the sanction as disproportionate

In a strongly worded statement, the club expressed its indignation, calling the decision an “aberration.” The OGC Nice highlighted its full cooperation with authorities and the praise it received from LFP delegates for its handling of the situation. The club emphasized that the playoff return, a potential turning point for its sporting future, will now unfold without the vital support of its fans—a move it deems excessively harsh on both sporting and emotional grounds.

The Nice-based team has vowed to explore every legal avenue to challenge the sanction. It plans to request conciliation through the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF). Should this process fail, the club will not hesitate to escalate the matter to the Administrative Court to defend its rights and seek justice.

What’s at stake for both teams

The playoff return between Nice and Saint-Étienne is more than just a match—it represents a high-stakes battle for Ligue 1 survival. With the outcome uncertain, the absence of spectators at the Allianz Riviera could significantly alter the dynamics of the game, adding an additional layer of pressure on the players to deliver under challenging circumstances.

The decision to enforce a closed-door match has sparked debate within the football community, with many questioning the proportionality of the sanction. For Nice, the penalty not only impacts the immediate playoff but also casts a shadow over the club’s broader ambitions and the morale of its supporters.
