Niger and Türkiye have taken a decisive step toward deeper strategic cooperation following an official visit by Niger’s President, General Abdourahamane Tiani, to Ankara. This marked his first overseas trip outside Africa since assuming office, underscoring the importance of the partnership.

Expanding horizons: Niger’s president makes historic Ankara visit

During the high-level meetings at the Turkish presidential palace, both leaders formalized a series of agreements spanning security, economic development, healthcare, education, and diplomatic collaboration. Among the key outcomes were a higher education protocol for 2026–2030, the establishment of a Joint Economic and Trade Commission (JETCO), an agreement on managing the Niger-Türkiye Friendship Hospital, and a diplomatic cooperation memorandum.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan emphasized the two countries’ shared ambition to deepen ties in critical sectors such as defense, energy, mining, agriculture, trade, and investment. He also announced the creation of a dedicated mechanism to unlock new business opportunities between the capitals, fostering stronger economic integration.

Türkiye reaffirms commitment to Sahel security and mutual growth

The Turkish president reiterated his country’s steadfast support for African nations facing security challenges, particularly in the Sahel region. He highlighted plans to strengthen military training programs and intelligence-sharing initiatives, grounded in principles of mutual respect, equal partnership, and reciprocal benefits.

Erdogan also highlighted Türkiye’s ongoing contributions in Niger, including the successful operation of the Niger-Türkiye Friendship Hospital, rural development and irrigation projects, and educational initiatives led by the Maarif Foundation. He noted that nearly 500 Nigerien students are currently pursuing higher education in Türkiye.

In response, President Tiani described the relationship with Türkiye as a cornerstone of Niger’s foreign policy. He reflected on how bilateral ties have flourished since Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s historic 2013 visit to Niamey, emphasizing Ankara’s pivotal role in supporting Niger’s efforts to counter armed groups in the Sahel. According to the president, this collaboration has significantly enhanced Niger’s security capabilities and regional stability.
