Cheered by an enthusiastic crowd, Ousmane Sonko began his day-long tour in Bargny, marking the first stop in a series of visits to Sébikotane, Khombole, and Bambey. The event centered on the launch of a nationwide campaign to sell Pastef membership cards, part of a bold drive to recruit one million new members by October.
The gathering in Bargny was more than just a political event—it was a moment of tribute. Sonko paid solemn homage to local activists who lost their lives during years of political strife that ultimately paved the way for Pastef’s rise to power. He highlighted their courage and sacrifice, calling them the backbone of the movement that brought Bassirou Diomaye Faye to the presidency in April 2024 and secured a sweeping victory in the subsequent legislative elections.
The party, founded by Sonko in 2014, framed its 2024 triumph as the culmination of a decade-long struggle. That journey was defined by relentless repression, arrests, and tragic losses between 2021 and 2024, when activists faced severe crackdowns while mobilizing support. In recognition of their contributions, Sonko announced a 100 million FCFA fund to support victims and families affected during those turbulent years.
Sonko’s agenda has shifted significantly since May 22, when he stepped down as Prime Minister to become President of the National Assembly—a political reshuffle that preceded growing tensions with the Head of State. His current tour coincides with the launch of the President’s own political party, signaling the formal end of the once-united Diomaye Président coalition. Tensions have since escalated, prompting a wave of resignations within Pastef’s ranks in recent weeks.
The membership card campaign, which kicked off in early July, has already seen remarkable momentum. In Mbacké, the first official stop, over 13,000 cards were sold within hours, prompting the party to place an emergency order in Dakar. With the national goal set at one million members before October, Sonko’s tour is not just symbolic—it’s a strategic push to consolidate grassroots support and redefine Pastef’s future in a rapidly changing political landscape.
