Ousmane Sonko, leader of Senegal’s opposition party Pastef, was greeted by jubilant crowds as he launched a nationwide membership campaign in Bargny, marking the first stop on his itinerary. The initiative aims to recruit one million new members, with subsequent visits planned in Sébikotane, Khombole, and Bambey.
The event in Bargny took on a deeply symbolic tone as Sonko paid tribute to fallen activists who lost their lives during the turbulent years of political struggle that preceded Pastef’s rise to power. He also praised the unwavering dedication of local supporters whose efforts were instrumental in securing the party’s historic victories.
Sonko’s political journey reached a turning point in April 2024 when his protégé, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, won the presidential election. This was followed by a sweeping parliamentary victory, fulfilling a decade-long promise of mobilization that came at a heavy cost. Between 2021 and 2024, the party endured relentless repression, arrests, and tragic losses, yet persevered in its mission.
Since May 22, Sonko has transitioned from Prime Minister to President of the National Assembly, a move that coincided with growing tensions between him and the President of the Republic. His current tour unfolds on the same day the head of state officially launches a rival political party, signaling the definitive fracture within the former Diomaye Président coalition. The schism has already triggered a wave of resignations among Pastef’s senior ranks.
In Bargny, Sonko reiterated his commitment to supporting militants and victims of the 2021-2024 period, having previously announced a 100 million FCFA fund to assist their families and communities.
The membership drive, which began in early July, has already seen remarkable success. In Mbacké, the campaign’s official kickoff saw 13,000 membership cards distributed within hours, prompting an urgent restocking order from Dakar. Sonko remains steadfast in his goal: enrolling one million new members before October.
