Constitutional Council: Ousmane Sonko’s surprising shift in discourse after initial appeasement

Ousmane Sonko has recently demonstrated a notable inconsistency in his public declarations concerning the Constitutional Council, transitioning from advocating for judicial respect to delivering sharp criticisms. During the inauguration of Pastef’s headquarters in Touba, he openly criticized the perceived influence of the President on legislation passed by deputies, labeling the unfolding situation as « grave » for the nation’s democratic processes.
Ousmane Sonko has seemingly altered his position regarding the Constitutional Council, with his public stance appearing to have evolved significantly within days. Following the Council’s decision to invalidate a parliamentary bill that aimed at bolstering legislative powers at the expense of presidential authority, the leader of Pastef had previously urged adherence to the ruling.
« This ruling is binding on everyone!… In a democracy, when institutions fulfill their roles, each within its defined scope of action, no crisis can arise, » Ousmane Sonko had affirmed. However, during the inauguration of Pastef’s new headquarters in Touba, the prominent political figure adopted a markedly different tone. Addressing his supporters, he vehemently denounced the decision rendered by the seven members of the Constitutional Council.
« The Constitutional Council cannot dictate that deputies must pass laws solely to please the President of the Republic. What is occurring in this country is serious, » he declared. Ousmane Sonko further questioned the Head of State’s frequent appeals to the Constitutional Council, stating, « Every week, he goes to seize the Constitutional Council, » in a clear reference to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. This development highlights the dynamic nature of African politics and is a key piece of West Africa news.
