Chaos erupted immediately after the final whistle. On the Champs-Élysées, a dozen young individuals targeted a bus shelter while a small police contingent attempted to disperse them. Near Porte de Saint-Cloud, close to Parc des Princes, law enforcement faced volleys of fireworks. They responded with tear gas, leading to the first arrests. Later that evening, a fleet of shared bicycles became the target of arson. Violent clashes broke out between groups of youth and police forces along the iconic avenue.

The Paris ring road descended into anarchy as dozens of motorcycles blocked traffic. Some riders defied the flow of traffic while pedestrians wandered among stranded vehicles. A 24-year-old motorcyclist died after colliding with a concrete barrier erected to halt the procession. By 4 AM, a 17-year-old was discovered suffering multiple stab wounds and remains in critical condition.

57 police officers injured nationwide

The following morning, the Interior Minister reported 57 injured police officers and gendarmes across the country. “We observed numerous projectile launches and a significant increase in fireworks used against security forces. I will quantify these figures, but it’s clear there was heightened aggression against law enforcement during interventions,” stated Laurent Nuñez. Video footage from the 8th arrondissement of Paris shows an individual firing a volley of fireworks in rapid succession.

Unrest and confrontations were documented in nearly fifteen French cities, including Grenoble in Isère. Several businesses were vandalized and looted. According to the Interior Minister, 780 individuals were detained nationwide during the night of May 30-31, with 457 still held in custody.
