Senegal journalist questioned over controversial remarks on Ousmane Sonko

The head of Public SN TV channel, journalist Aïssatou Diop Fall, has been summoned by Senegal’s Special Cybercrime Division following her controversial remarks calling for the abduction of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko. Despite issuing a public apology, she remains under scrutiny as authorities investigate the incident.

Journalist Aïssatou Diop Fall has been formally summoned to appear before the Special Cybercrime Division (DSC) of Senegal’s National Police. The summons follows an investigation initiated by the prosecutor’s office at the Dakar High Court, where Sonko is a prominent political figure.

She is scheduled to meet with investigators today, Monday, to address statements that sparked intense debate on social media and public forums across the country.

Controversial statements spark outrage

The controversy began when Aïssatou Diop Fall publicly expressed a wish for Ousmane Sonko, leader of the PASTEF party, to be abducted by armed groups. The remarks immediately drew widespread criticism and condemnation from various sectors of society.

In response to the backlash, the journalist issued a video statement apologizing for her words, acknowledging the gravity of her statements and expressing remorse.

However, the prosecutor’s office decided to proceed with legal scrutiny, ordering her appearance before cybercrime investigators to clarify the circumstances surrounding her statements.
