The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Centre for Gender Development (ECGD) has joined forces with UN Women and key ECOWAS agencies to approve a groundbreaking regional initiative in Abidjan. This program, focused on gender equality, climate action, and green economy, marks a significant step toward sustainable development across West Africa.

Finalized during a two-day workshop held on May 15 and 16 at the ECOWAS Resident Representation in Côte d’Ivoire, the initiative aims to strengthen regional collaboration in addressing critical priorities. These include gender equity, climate resilience, and ecological transition, while also securing funding for the ECOWAS Gender and Climate Action Plan. The framework was developed to ensure inclusive growth and environmental sustainability across member states.

Sandra Oulaté Fattoh, Director of the ECGD, highlighted the dual nature of ecological transition for women and girls in West Africa. “While it presents challenges, it also opens doors to new economic opportunities, empowering women to play a central role in climate action and sustainable practices,” she noted.

Adjaratou Fatou Ndiaye, UN Women’s Resident Representative in Côte d’Ivoire, emphasized the shift from policy to tangible action. “This program translates high-level commitments into concrete measures, addressing both climate and economic challenges faced by the region,” she stated.

Dr. Kalilou Sylla, ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, underscored the need for an inclusive green transition. “Opportunities must be accessible to all, particularly women and youth, ensuring no one is left behind in this transformative process,” he explained.

The finalized program document is set to be officially adopted during a working session scheduled from June 29 to July 6, 2026, in Lomé, Togo.
