Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko took a definitive stance on Friday during a heated parliamentary session, vigorously defending the newly enacted legislation that toughens penalties for unnatural acts. Speaking during a government Q&A, he outlined a clear and uncompromising government position against what he described as the alarming spread of the phenomenon.

Addressing lawmakers, Sonko was unequivocal: the new law is not directed at any individual or group. “A law, once passed, is impersonal,” he asserted. “No targeted interventions were ever considered.”

The Prime Minister highlighted strong backing from religious leaders for the legislative initiative. He revealed that several religious figures had reached out to the government to express their approval of the approach taken.

In a fiery speech, Sonko accused networks of promoting such practices in Senegal, citing instances where young students allegedly received money and phones in exchange. He warned that without state intervention, these behaviors could become normalized in Senegalese society.

Sonko insisted on strict enforcement, urging the judiciary to apply the law without exception. “Justice must ensure the full, complete, and impartial application of this law,” he declared, vowing that no one involved would be shielded from consequences. “We won’t hide the big fish,” he warned.

Rejecting any external pressure on this societal issue, Sonko emphasized Senegal’s sovereignty. Referencing Western countries, he stated, “We owe no lessons to anyone.” He maintained that the entire Senegalese people reject this practice.

Touching on the international context, the Prime Minister condemned attempts to impose certain cultural and social models on African nations. He also criticized a segment of Senegal’s elite, describing them as “complexed” by Western stances.

Concluding his address, Sonko ruled out any possibility of suspending or softening the measure. “There will be no moratorium,” he stated, reaffirming the government’s determination to fully implement the new law.
