The Diomaye Président coalition has issued a strong rebuttal to the recent remarks made by Ousmane Sonko during the inauguration of the Pastef headquarters in Mbacké. Coalition leaders condemned what they described as disrespectful statements targeting the Head of State, viewing them as a departure from the expected decorum of a high-ranking official.
Bassirou Dieng, a prominent member of the coalition, emphasized that such rhetoric is incompatible with the principles of a rule of law and a functioning democracy. Speaking to iRadio, he stated, « In any State governed by law or a Republic, it is unacceptable for a National Assembly President to make derogatory remarks against the President of the Republic. »
Dieng highlighted the widespread condemnation of Sonko’s statements across social media and traditional news outlets. « Since his remarks in Mbacké yesterday, public reactions have been overwhelmingly negative. Virtually no one agrees with his words. People are denouncing Sonko’s inflammatory statements, » he noted, urging the opposition leader to exercise restraint.
The coalition also warned that it would no longer tolerate what it perceives as repeated attacks on state institutions. Dieng declared, « The Diomaye Président coalition will respond decisively. Going forward, turning a blind eye to Ousmane Sonko’s disrespectful remarks against His Excellency the President of the Republic—and against other representatives of the State—will no longer be an option. »
The coalition’s firm stance follows Sonko’s latest public statements in Mbacké, which have intensified political discourse and sparked sharp reactions within the presidential majority.
