It has been three weeks since the Confédération africaine de football (CAF) decided to strip Sénégal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) honors. This move effectively designated Maroc as the winner, following the incidents that disrupted the final moments of the match on January 18 in Rabat. The Lions of Teranga have consistently voiced their opposition to this ruling.
This Monday, the Fédération sénégalaise de football finally received the official notification and the reasoned grounds for this title withdrawal from CAF. This step was mandatory for the federation to formally bring the case before the Tribunal arbitral du sport (TAS) for a legal challenge.
The TAS to provide a final ruling shortly
The president of CAF has already suggested that he will defer to the final judgment of the TAS. Although the court has not yet announced a specific date for its deliberations, a decision is expected within the coming weeks. This ruling will be definitive, as neither Sénégal nor Maroc will have the right to appeal the court’s conclusion.
“The TAS is fully prepared to resolve these types of disputes with the assistance of independent and specialized arbitrators,” noted Matthieu Reeb, the Director General of the TAS. He added that the court is aware of the urgency for fans and teams to receive a final answer and will ensure the arbitration process is completed as quickly as possible while maintaining the right of all parties to a fair hearing.
