Senegal set to challenge CAF’s decision in final appeal at TAS for CAN 2025
Three weeks of suspense have come to an end. The Senegalese Football Federation has now obtained the detailed ruling from the Confederation of African Football’s Appeals Committee, according to information received. This decision is crucial as it enables Senegal to proceed with an appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS) and challenge the CAF’s controversial verdict awarding Morocco the CAN 2025 title by default.
As outlined in the document circulated to all parties, the Appeals Committee reaffirmed Morocco’s victory (3-0) but explicitly excluded matters related to prize money, medals, and the trophy from its ruling. These aspects fall outside the committee’s jurisdiction, as specified in the document. Despite this, the CAF’s Executive Committee has yet to issue an official statement on the CAN 2025 winner, leaving fans and stakeholders in limbo. The CAF President has merely stated that the matter will be deferred to the TAS.
No official TAS decision timeline yet
The resolution of the CAN 2025 final is drawing closer, more than two months after the match was marred by chaotic scenes among supporters and controversial incidents on the pitch, including the Senegalese team’s abandonment of the field in protest. While the TAS has not yet set a precise schedule for deliberations, the proceedings will ultimately bring this prolonged saga to a close. Neither team will have further avenues for appeal once the decision is rendered.
“The TAS is fully equipped to handle such disputes with the support of specialized and independent arbitrators,” emphasized Me Matthieu Reeb, TAS Secretary General. “We are well aware of the eagerness of the teams and their supporters to receive a definitive ruling as soon as possible. We are committed to ensuring the arbitration process is conducted promptly while upholding the right of all parties to a fair hearing.”
