In a decisive move, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of the Sénégal has formally launched his own political party, marking a definitive break from his former ally, Ousmane Sonko, leader of the ruling Pastef party. The establishment of the Parti des Patriotes Républicains (PPR) signals a deepening political divide that has been simmering for months.

Formerly a key figure within the Pastef, which Sonko founded, Faye’s new party has already attracted a significant number of defections. High-ranking regional officials and youth leaders from the Pastef have switched allegiance, while members of the opposition Alliance pour la République have also joined the ranks. This mass exodus underscores the growing dissatisfaction within political circles and the public.

The rift between Faye and Sonko stems from fundamental disagreements over critical policy decisions, particularly regarding interactions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) amid a severe debt crisis. Their alliance, which propelled them to power in 2024 under the Pastef banner, now appears irreparably fractured.

The newly formed PPR sets the stage for an intense political showdown, with local elections in 2027 and the presidential race in 2029 looming as key battlegrounds. Faye’s initiative not only reshapes the political landscape but also raises questions about the future direction of Sénégal’s governance and economic policies.
