During a campaign event in Khombole for the sale of party membership cards, Senegalese political leader Ousmane Sonko addressed a public statement made by former minister Maimouna Dièye, which included what he deemed an inappropriate religious reference.
Maimouna Dièye had opened her speech by invoking a revered Islamic phrase when mentioning Sonko’s name, stating, “I am honored to stand here today, especially in the presence of Seydina Ousmane Sonko Salalahou Aleyhi Wa Salam.” The phrase, commonly reserved for the Prophet Mohammed, drew immediate attention.
Responding to the comment, Ousmane Sonko clarified his stance, emphasizing that such religious attributions should not be attached to any individual, including himself. Speaking directly to the audience, he stated, “The respect people show me sometimes leads to such excesses. My sister Maimouna Dièye, when she spoke earlier, included that phrase with my name. Ma téyé sama Guémign.”
Sonko went further to explain that religious reverence belongs solely to the Prophet Mohammed, reinforcing his position with conviction. “Let us reserve such expressions for the Prophet. I have never reached that level, nor will I ever,” he affirmed, as the crowd applauded in approval.
This clarification comes as part of Sonko’s ongoing national tour to promote membership drives for his party, Pastef. Following the event in Khombole, the leader is scheduled to continue his campaign in Bargny, Bambey, and Sébikhotane, engaging with supporters across the country.
