The landscape of African football has been shaken by a crisis of confidence following the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) decision to strip Sénégal of its CAN 2025 title. This move, which effectively handed the championship to Maroc via a 0-3 adjusted scoreline, has drawn fierce condemnation from international media, experts, and various clubs across the continent.

Widespread boycotts and club protests

Resistance to the CAF ruling is intensifying. The Égypte-based club Pharco FC has already declared an indefinite boycott of all CAF-sanctioned tournaments. Club officials described the sanction against Sénégal as an “unjust and politically motivated” act that violates the fundamental spirit of the sport.

This sentiment is shared by several other organizations. Teams from Égypte and Algérie are reportedly considering similar withdrawals from continental play. Meanwhile, prominent clubs such as Mamelodi Sundowns from Afrique du Sud and Simba SC from Tanzanie have labeled the decision “disgraceful,” warning that it sets a perilous precedent for the future of the game in Afrique.

The controversy behind the Rabat final

The dispute centers on the CAN 2025 final held in Rabat. While Sénégal initially celebrated a 1-0 victory thanks to a goal by Pape Gueye, the CAF later overturned the result. The governing body ruled that Sénégal had violated regulations by briefly walking off the pitch to protest a penalty awarded to Maroc in the closing stages of regulation time.

Crucially, the match had actually resumed after a ten-minute pause, and Sénégal finished the game on the field to lift the trophy on January 18. However, following a formal complaint by Maroc, the CAF retroactively changed the score to a 3-0 defeat for the Lions de la Téranga, officially naming the host nation as champions.

International media and legal appeals

Global sports outlets have reacted with disbelief. L’Équipe characterized the ruling as one of the most “bizarre and controversial” in the history of modern football, while The Athletic noted that such a reversal is entirely without precedent in major continental tournaments. Experts argue that if a serious breach had occurred, the match should have been terminated immediately rather than having the result altered days later.

In response, the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football has announced its intention to take the matter to the Tribunal Arbitral du Sport (TAS) and FIFA. Reports suggest the Sénégal national team is even weighing a total withdrawal from CAF competitions to protest what they perceive as blatant inequality.

This ongoing scandal threatens the prestige of the CAN, the continent’s most celebrated tournament. Stakeholders now fear that the CAF‘s credibility and the competitive integrity of African football could be permanently damaged if this crisis is not resolved transparently.
