Senegal: President Bassirou Diomaye Faye relieves Ousmane Sonko of duties
In a decisive move, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has officially terminated the mandate of Ousmane Sonko as Prime Minister and head of government in Senegal. The announcement, made during a televised address to the nation, marks the end of Sonko’s tenure and the dissolution of the entire cabinet.
Ousmane Sonko no longer serves as Senegal’s Prime Minister
President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has just announced the dismissal of Ousmane Sonko from his position, bringing an end to the prime minister’s tenure and reshaping the political landscape of Senegal.
The decision, delivered during a national broadcast, terminates not only Sonko’s mandate but also dissolves the entire government, including ministers and secretaries of state.
Following the announcement, Ousmane Sonko took to social media to share his reaction. “Alhamdoulillah. Tonight, I will sleep peacefully in the Keur Gorgui residence,” he wrote, expressing relief and gratitude.
Consequences and next steps
The dismissal coincides with the dissolution of the Republic’s government. According to the Presidency, a new Prime Minister will be appointed, and a new cabinet will be formed under President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s leadership.
The political alliance between Sonko and Faye dates back to 2024, when Sonko, barred from running for office, endorsed Faye as the reformist candidate. Faye’s subsequent victory in the presidential election, securing over 54% of the vote in a single round, was largely attributed to Sonko’s backing and nationwide campaign efforts.
