Togo’s commitment to advancing its higher education sector saw a significant review recently, as Minister Gado Tchangbedji of Higher Education and Research convened with a delegation from the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) in Lomé. The central focus of their discussions was the ongoing Project to Support the Implementation of Higher Education Reform in Sciences and Engineering (Paresi).
This crucial working session provided an opportunity for both parties to thoroughly assess the strategic program’s current status. They meticulously examined achievements to date, identified any hurdles encountered, and deliberated on necessary actions to accelerate the planned activities, all aimed at elevating the quality of university training and bolstering research capabilities in scientific and technical disciplines.
During the meeting, Minister Tchangbedji acknowledged the substantial progress already made. He also emphasized the importance of expediting administrative and technical procedures to ensure the timely completion of crucial infrastructure developments outlined within the project.
Key elements of the Paresi initiative include the construction of advanced multi-purpose research laboratories at both the University of Lomé and the University of Kara. Additionally, a new pedagogical laboratory is being established at the École Normale Supérieure d’Atakpamé. These state-of-the-art facilities are poised to significantly enhance learning, research, and innovation environments across Togo’s public higher education institutions.
Jointly funded by the Togolese State and the Islamic Development Bank, the Paresi project reflects the government’s strategic vision to modernize the nation’s universities and align them with the evolving demands of economic development. The project specifically aims to upgrade educational equipment, improve university infrastructure, and cultivate expertise in vital science and engineering fields.
Beyond tangible infrastructural investments, the program also places a strong emphasis on fostering academic excellence. To this end, scholarships were awarded last year to Master’s and Doctoral students attending the universities of Lomé and Kara, supporting advanced studies and research.
Through this robust partnership, Togo is strategically working to strengthen its human capital and ensure that its higher education system makes an even greater contribution to the structural transformation of the national economy.
