The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) Director-General, Jean Kaseya, recently engaged in a “constructive” dialogue with French Health Minister Stéphanie Rist. This significant discussion followed the confirmation of an imported case of Bundibugyo Ebola virus disease on French soil.

Mr. Kaseya expressed his appreciation for France’s clear commitment that no travel restrictions would be imposed as a consequence of this particular case, a stance vital for maintaining global connectivity and humanitarian efforts.

The patient, a Congolese humanitarian physician, had been actively involved in the Ebola response in Ituri, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), working with the NGO ALIMA. He tested positive for the virus after his arrival in France, where he typically resides. This incident marks the first confirmed Ebola case within French territory.

Highlighting the unified global health approach, Kaseya reiterated the unwavering dedication of Africa CDC, the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), alongside French and Congolese authorities. Their collective focus remains on containing the epidemic, safeguarding communities, and advancing a robust, coordinated response on both continental and international scales.
