The relationship between Chad and Russia has taken a significant step forward with new agreements aimed at strengthening military and diplomatic cooperation. On July 14 in Moscow, Chadian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Sabre Fadoul met with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, to discuss ways to enhance regional security in the Sahara-Sahel zone. A key outcome of the talks was the signing of a visa waiver agreement for holders of diplomatic passports, a move that underscores the growing alignment between the two nations.

During the press conference, Lavrov addressed international issues, including the conflict in Ukraine, where he accused Ukrainian authorities of engaging in terrorist activities in the Azov and Black Seas. He also emphasized the importance of Russia’s partnership with African nations in combating terrorism, a shared priority for Chad as it faces security challenges in the Sahel.

Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby is set to participate in the upcoming Russia-Africa Summit in October, further solidifying the country’s commitment to this strategic alliance. Fadoul praised Russia’s contributions to stabilizing the Sahel region and expressed optimism that joint efforts with regional partners will yield progress in countering extremism and insecurity.
