Two prominent political figures from Chad, Me Bidi Valentin and Bombay Kelo, who were serving an eight-year prison sentence as members of the former Political Actors Consultation Group (GCAP), have been temporarily released on medical grounds.
Health concerns drive provisional freedom
Me Adoum Moussa, a lawyer representing the former GCAP members, confirmed that the decision to release the two individuals stems from their deteriorating health conditions. The prosecutor’s office in N’Djamena authorized their provisional freedom after recognizing the severity of their illnesses, compounded by their advanced age.
« Their release is a response to urgent health needs, not a final resolution,» Me Adoum Moussa clarified. « While this provides temporary relief, their legal situation remains unresolved.»
Broader efforts for detained associates
Beyond Me Bidi Valentin and Bombay Kelo, the legal team is actively pursuing similar measures for other detainees facing health complications. « Proceedings are underway to secure provisional releases for additional inmates with serious medical conditions,» the lawyer noted.
Legal recourse continues
The defence has also filed an appeal against the original verdict handed down to the GCAP leaders. « We have contested the ruling and are awaiting its review by the N’Djamena Court of Appeal,» Me Adoum Moussa stated.
Last month, the former GCAP leaders were sentenced to eight years in prison on charges including rebellion, criminal association, and illegal possession of firearms. Their legal team remains committed to challenging the conviction and seeking justice for their clients.
