The inaugural return flight carrying Burkinabè pilgrims from the 2026 Hajj landed at Ouagadougou’s international airport on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, marking the beginning of the repatriation phase for those who completed Islam’s fifth pillar in the holy lands.
This first wave of 342 faithful disembarked under clear skies, greeted by overjoyed families and dignitaries. Dressed in vibrant traditional attire, the pilgrims radiated a sense of fulfillment, their faces reflecting the spiritual journey they had just undertaken.
Among them was Hadja Karidja Karambiri/Koné, visibly moved as she stepped onto Burkinabè soil. With tears of joy in her eyes, she shared her experience: « Alhamdulillah, the journey to Makkah was everything I hoped for. This was my first Hajj, and I can’t express how deeply moved I am. Every moment was perfect… Above all, we prayed fervently for lasting peace and unity to return to Burkina Faso ».
The government, represented by Saïdou Sankara, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Mobility, conveyed official appreciation for the smooth conduct of this year’s pilgrimage. While noting that a full assessment would come later, he confirmed no major incidents had marred the journey. « This is a moment of profound satisfaction. We’ve come to welcome our brothers and sisters back safely after fulfilling their sacred duty. On behalf of the Prime Minister, we extend our heartfelt congratulations and best wishes. May their strengthened faith inspire hope across the nation, and may every prayer uttered in Makkah bring blessings to their families and our entire country », he declared.
The Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina (FAIB), led by El Hadj Oumarou Zoungrana, commended the meticulous organization of this Hajj season. « The level of coordination and care shown by the organizing committee deserves high praise. We are immensely grateful for their dedication, which ensured this pilgrimage proceeded without a hitch », Zoungrana stated.
With the first flight safely landed, the aerial repatriation process is now in full swing. Authorities and the organizing committee remain on high alert to ensure every pilgrim returns home smoothly in the coming days.
