France and Morocco deepen strategic ties with new agreements
Diplomatic update. During an official visit to Rabat, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu underscored the need to elevate the longstanding partnership between France and Morocco. Nearly fifteen new agreements are set to be signed, reinforcing cooperation established in 2024 across multiple sectors.

Partnership poised to “scale new heights”
In his opening remarks at the 15th High-Level Meeting between France and Morocco, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu described the moment as a « turning point » in bilateral relations. He emphasized the need to « scale new heights » by deepening cooperation, particularly in security, counterterrorism, and joint initiatives across Africa. Morocco’s Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch echoed this sentiment, stressing the urgency of accelerating the implementation of commitments made under the enhanced 2024 partnership agreement.
Fifteen agreements on the horizon
The two governments are preparing to finalize nearly fifteen agreements spanning economic, security, migration, cultural, and defense sectors. Key initiatives include the development of a Regional Express Rail (RER) line in Rabat, defense partnerships, and expanded cultural exchanges. The visit may also pave the way for a future state visit by King Mohammed VI to France, potentially accompanied by the signing of an unprecedented friendship treaty presented by Lecornu as « groundbreaking ».
Strategic alignment amid ongoing scrutiny
This high-level engagement follows a period of restored relations between Paris and Rabat, marked by France’s 2024 recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara. Despite renewed scrutiny over reports of Morocco’s alleged use of the Pegasus spyware, neither French officials nor the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have addressed these claims. Both sides remain committed to advancing their strategic partnership.
