The French Embassy in Yaoundé has publicly addressed the reasons behind the more stringent procedures now in place for Cameroonian student visa applications. The embassy confirms that widespread fraud is a significant concern, directly impacting the process for those seeking to study in France.

Muriel Piquet-Viaux, the cooperation and cultural action advisor at the embassy, detailed the various deceptive tactics encountered in applications from Cameroonian students admitted to private institutions in France. These strategies include presenting false certificates, falsified academic transcripts, incorrect identification documents, and fabricated proof of blocked funds, among other irregularities.

Consular authorities heighten scrutiny

In response to the frequent occurrence of these fraudulent practices, French consular authorities have significantly increased their level of vigilance. “There are numerous possibilities for fraud, so we now have a very substantial service dedicated to verifying every single document,” explained the advisor.

These instances of fraud are, according to the embassy, the direct cause of the new financial requirements for issuing student visas to Cameroonians intending to enroll in private French schools. Applicants are now mandated to provide evidence of either full tuition payment or possession of the equivalent funds before their visa can be granted.

For students who had previously paid deposits, Muriel Piquet-Viaux clarified that the resolution “depends on the institution where the money was deposited.” She further explained the current system: “Here, it involves blocking a sum of money in an account. Once the visa is approved and the student is accepted, these funds are then released.”

Cameroon currently stands as the sole African nation to face these newly implemented rules from France concerning student mobility. This decision has sparked considerable concern and protest among numerous Cameroonian families.
