The Haut-Uele provincial government’s communication unit has swiftly responded to allegations questioning Governor Jean Bakomito Gambu’s potential ties with Corneille Nangaa. Below is the full statement issued by Muammar Awoni, Head of the Provincial Communication Cell (Cellcom).

In a formal rebuttal, Cellcom categorically denies claims that the economic life of Isiro, the provincial capital, was paralyzed on June 17, 2026. According to local stakeholders consulted, no such disruption occurred. The statement also dismisses reports of school closures, attributing them to the natural end-of-academic-year schedule in June, not to any protests or unrest.

Cellcom further challenges the premise of Governor Bakomito’s alleged alignment with Corneille Nangaa, emphasizing the governor’s unwavering commitment to peace and stability in Haut-Uele. It highlights his leadership in mobilizing public awareness against destabilizing forces, including those linked to Paul Kagame and the M23 rebellion, which has caused widespread suffering in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The statement underscores the governor’s proactive measures to bolster security. Notably, he has equipped FARDC (DRC armed forces) troops in the region with vehicles and logistical support to enhance operational efficiency. In Watsa territory, particularly in Mungbere, security operations led by FARDC have successfully contained suspected ADF incursions, with high-level military oversight ensuring sustained efforts to restore peace and facilitate the return of displaced populations.

Cellcom condemns the accusations as baseless attempts to tarnish the governor’s reputation. It calls for greater journalistic rigor in verifying claims before publication, cautioning against the spread of unverified information that could undermine institutional credibility.

Governor Bakomito’s stance on national peace and development

Governor Bakomito’s dedication to his province’s security and development aligns with President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi’s vision for peace and prosperity in the DRC. Despite facing smear campaigns, he remains resolute in countering destabilization efforts across the country.

“We urge all media outlets to exercise due diligence in reporting on sensitive issues. Allegations without verifiable evidence not only mislead the public but also distract from the critical work of building a peaceful and prosperous future for the Haut-Uele and the entire DRC.”
