Jihadist factions operating within the challenging ‘three borders’ zone have circulated a video, which they claim depicts the June 17, 2026, assault on the Inates military base in Niger’s western Tillabéry region.

The visual content, alongside accompanying statements from the perpetrators, suggests the offensive commenced with a barrage of mortar fire targeting the military installations. The assailants assert they subsequently encircled the base before initiating a ground assault involving automatic weaponry and grenade launchers, portraying what appears to be a meticulously coordinated operation.

According to the video’s producers, Nigerien soldiers reportedly offered only limited resistance before attempting to withdraw. They also claim to have established multiple ambushes surrounding the base, strategically placed to impede any retreat or the arrival of military reinforcements.

However, the casualty figures put forth by these jihadist groups are currently impossible to independently corroborate. They claim responsibility for the deaths of at least 80 Nigerien military personnel, the destruction of seven armored vehicles, six pickup trucks, and nine tanker trucks. Furthermore, they assert to have seized twenty pickup trucks, eighteen machine guns, one sniper rifle, several grenade launchers, three mortars, and substantial quantities of ammunition.

As of now, neither the Nigerien authorities nor any independent entity has confirmed these specific numbers. It is a common tactic in such conflicts for armed organizations to leverage their own video recordings as propaganda tools. This serves to showcase their operational capabilities, intimidate adversaries, and bolster recruitment efforts. Consequently, the figures they disseminate may be exaggerated or incomplete.

Regardless of the unverified claims, this latest attack starkly underscores the persistent deterioration of the security landscape in the Tillabéry region. Nigerien forces continue to contend with increasingly sophisticated offensives from armed groups. Despite strategic adjustments implemented over recent years and enhanced military cooperation with new international partners, these groups consistently demonstrate their capacity to plan and execute complex assaults against established military positions.

The release of this video also carries significant strategic weight. Beyond merely documenting the intensity of the combat, it aims to project the formidable power of jihadist groups, undermine the morale of security forces, and send a clear message to all stakeholders involved in the broader counter-insurgency efforts across the Sahel.
