Legal challenge launched against Ousmane Sonko’s statements about Touba

Senegal is witnessing a fresh legal confrontation following public remarks attributed to Ousmane Sonko regarding Touba. A descendant of Serigne Touba has formally petitioned the Prosecutor’s Office at the Dakar High Court of First Instance, urging the initiation of a judicial investigation into the matter.

In a petition dated July 14, 2026, Serigne Modou Maroun Niang—identified as a Senegalese citizen, entrepreneur, and grandson of the founder of the holy city—contends that statements linked to the PASTEF leader have severely tarnished Touba’s reputation and the dignity of its residents.

The complaint centers on a widely circulated assertion that “dirty money has entered the holy city of Touba.” According to the petitioner, such claims contradict the sacred values of faith, integrity, honesty, justice, and diligence that define Touba, as exemplified by the teachings of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba.

The legal filing requests the Prosecutor to expedite an inquiry, summon Ousmane Sonko for clarification, and demand evidence supporting his remarks. Additionally, the complaint seeks comprehensive investigations to verify the accuracy of the allegations. Should the evidence warrant it, the petitioners propose pursuing legal action under potential offenses such as defamation, dissemination of false information, or other violations under Senegalese law.

The complainant claims to possess substantial evidence, including video recordings, transcriptions of the statements in question, and media publications documenting the remarks.

This development unfolds amid escalating political tensions surrounding the PASTEF leader’s statements, raising the possibility of a new judicial battle if the Prosecutor’s Office proceeds with the request.
