Coach Tom Saintfiet has officially stepped down from his role as head coach of Mali’s national football team, ending his tenure in April 2026 after nearly two years in charge. The Belgian tactician, who took charge in August 2024, announced his departure amid escalating political tensions and security challenges in the country.

In a heartfelt statement shared on Facebook, Saintfiet reflected on his experience, expressing pride in his work despite difficult circumstances. “Today marks the end of my mission as head coach of Mali’s senior national team. I leave with pride and commitment, even amid challenging conditions. The time has come to move on to a new challenge,” he wrote on April 27, 2026.

Tom Saintfiet’s legacy: strong performances despite instability

Under Saintfiet’s leadership, Mali maintained impressive form in international competitions. The team suffered just two defeats in 17 matches, including a narrow 1-0 quarter-final loss to Sénégal in the most recent Africa Cup of Nations (CAN). His tenure coincided with a period of political instability and heightened security threats from rebel and jihadist groups.

Saintfiet took over from Éric Chelle and navigated the national team through a demanding qualifying campaign for the FIFA World Cup. His focus remained on uniting the team and fostering resilience, despite off-field challenges. “In these particularly difficult circumstances, my thoughts are with the Malian people. Football is a unifying force, and I hope it continues to bring peace and hope to Mali,” he added.

The coach, now 53, had previously been linked with the Ghana job before the appointment of Carlos Queiroz. The Football Federation of Mali (FMF), led by President Mahazou Baba Cissé, acknowledged Saintfiet’s contributions and opened a search for his successor.
