Mali thanks outgoing Belgian coach after World Cup 2026 qualification setback

The Mali national football team coach Tom Saintfiet

The Mali national football team has made a formal change in its coaching staff. The Mali Football Federation (Femafoot) announced the departure of Belgian coach Tom Saintfiet, ending his tenure on Tuesday evening. The 53-year-old tactician, who took charge in August 2024, failed to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and saw his team eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations by Senegal.

The newly elected president of Femafoot, Mahazou Cisset, took to social media to publicly acknowledge Saintfiet’s contributions. In an official statement, he praised the outgoing coach’s dedication, professionalism, and resilience, stating: “Throughout your time with us, you demonstrated unwavering commitment, exemplary professionalism, and remarkable determination in fulfilling your duties. Even in a demanding environment, you maintained team unity, structured technical work, and carried the colors of the Mali national team with dignity.”

Femafoot launches coach recruitment process

The Mali Football Federation has initiated an open call for applications to find Tom Saintfiet’s successor. Interested candidates have until May 10 to submit their applications. The new coach will be tasked with leading the Mali national team in upcoming competitions.

This leadership transition comes at a pivotal moment for Malian football, following the team’s recent setbacks in major tournaments. The federation’s decision to publicly recognize Saintfiet’s contributions reflects its commitment to transparency and appreciation for past efforts, while also signaling a fresh start for the team’s future campaigns.
