Mali: son of abducted opposition figure Mountaga Tall also vanishes, lawyers confirm
A wave of apprehension sweeps across Mali as the son of prominent opposition figure Mountaga Tall has now gone missing, following his father’s abduction earlier this month. Legal representatives for the family are raising urgent alarms over these troubling developments, set against a backdrop of escalating tensions between the military regime and civil society in West Africa.

Cheick Mamadou Tall, the eldest son of the renowned Malian lawyer and opposition leader Mountaga Tall, reportedly vanished on May 16, 2026. This unsettling event comes just weeks after his father was forcibly taken at the beginning of the month, according to statements issued by their legal team, who are now vocally demanding their immediate release.
Me Tall was “abducted” on May 2 by “hooded men,” as reported by his family in Mali, a Sahelian nation currently governed by a junta that has significantly curtailed civil liberties.
Mountaga Tall was a key member of the M5 movement, which played a pivotal role in the protests that led to the downfall of former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta (IBK)’s administration in 2020. Initially an ally of the military leaders who seized power that year, he later distanced himself, becoming one of their most vocal critics within Malian African politics.
Disappearance of Mountaga Tall’s son
In a communiqué dated Tuesday and released on Wednesday, his lawyers expressed profound dismay, stating they “learned with consternation of the disappearance on Saturday, May 16, 2026, of Cheick Mamadou Tall, his eldest son, following a telephone call received” by the latter.
The collective of lawyers voiced deep concern over “the commission of this illegal act, which follows the abduction” of Mountaga Tall. They urged “the competent administrative and judicial authorities to do everything possible to ensure both individuals regain their freedom” and that full light is shed on their disappearances, as stated in the communiqué signed by four legal representatives.
The abduction of Me Tall occurred just days after the deadly attacks on April 25, carried out by jihadists from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM, affiliated with Al-Qaeda) alongside rebels from the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), targeting strategic positions held by the military regime.
Context of the abductions
Mountaga Tall has been actively involved in defending several military personnel who were arrested in recent months under the junta’s orders, accused of “attempting to destabilize institutions.”
He also initiated legal challenges in various courts to contest the military rulers’ decision to dissolve Malian political parties, highlighting the ongoing struggle for democratic principles in West Africa.
