nice faces stadium ban for key playoff match after fan incidents
The disciplinary committee has imposed a two-match full stadium closure and one suspended match at Allianz Riviera following the disturbances during Sunday’s Nice-Metz fixture. OGC Nice, planning to appeal, is expected to host the return playoff against Saint-Étienne on May 29 in an empty stadium.
The LFP Disciplinary Committee has handed OGC Nice a sanction comprising two complete closed-door matches and an additional match with a suspended sentence for their Allianz Riviera stadium. This decision stems from “the use and throwing of pyrotechnic devices, pitch invasion, and vandalism observed at the final whistle” during the Nice-Metz encounter, which marked the 34th and concluding matchday of Ligue 1.
Consequently, this ruling means the crucial return playoff against AS Saint-Étienne on May 29, along with the first home game of the upcoming season, will take place without spectators. However, the Riviera club has already filed an appeal against this judgment, hoping to welcome supporters for the decisive clash against AS Saint-Étienne. For the first leg, scheduled for May 26 at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, Nice will already be without the suspended Elye Wahi.
Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain also faced disciplinary action, incurring the closure of the Auteuil stand at Parc des Princes due to “the use of pyrotechnic devices and observed visual displays.” This particular sanction will be enforced during their initial home Ligue 1 fixture of the 2026-2027 season.
The situation involving FC Nantes, following the early pitch invasion at Stade de la Beaujoire during their match against Toulouse, is set to be reviewed and decided upon at a later date.
