Premier Minister Ousmane Sonko voiced strong frustration regarding the handling of judicial cases related to public accountability during an interministerial council meeting held this Thursday.
During the session, the head of government intervened following a presentation by Justice Minister Yassine Fall. He directly questioned her department’s effectiveness in addressing alleged irregular management cases within the judicial system.
The Premier Minister challenged the pace of legal proceedings and the lack of judicial follow-up in several sensitive matters, highlighting a persistent sense of impunity. He contended that substantial public resources might have been misappropriated without visible concrete judicial resolutions, which, in his view, undermines the credibility of public action and African politics in Senegal.
In his address, Ousmane Sonko emphasized the critical need to assign responsibility across all levels, encompassing both former and current administrative and political officials. He also drew attention to what he described as ongoing systemic failures within the judicial chain, suggesting a structural impediment to processing certain cases.
Responding to these concerns, the Minister of Justice affirmed her department’s active efforts to advance current proceedings. She reiterated the judiciary’s commitment to prosecuting all implicated individuals where evidence permits, despite various institutional and operational challenges faced by the justice system in Senegal.
Nevertheless, the Premier Minister maintained pressure, advocating for an acceleration of judicial processes and enhanced transparency in case monitoring. He stressed that accountability forms a fundamental cornerstone of the current administration’s mandate.
Concluding his remarks, Ousmane Sonko reaffirmed that judicial matters serve the public interest and must be handled with utmost rigor and promptness to uphold citizen trust in state institutions.
