The President of Benin, Patrice Talon, has been awarded an unprecedented distinction as an honorary Hounon by the Vodun community. On May 2, 2026, this recognition was presented in acknowledgment of his relentless efforts to promote and preserve Benin’s indigenous religions.

Patrice Talon’s commitment to ancestral heritage

Since assuming office in 2016, Patrice Talon has spearheaded numerous initiatives to revitalize Benin’s cultural and religious traditions. Key achievements include the establishment of Vodun Days, the repatriation of looted royal treasures, the creation of the Vodun Rites Committee, and the development of the Couvents Route. Additionally, his administration has overseen major infrastructure projects such as the Ouidah Arena and the upcoming International Vodun Museum in Porto-Novo.

A historic tribute to a leader’s legacy

In a grand ceremony held on May 2, Vodun dignitaries honored Patrice Talon with the title of Hounon d’honneur, the highest distinction in the Vodun tradition. The event underscored the president’s dedication to safeguarding Benin’s cultural identity. Professor Mahougnon Kakpo, a prominent figure in the ceremony, emphasized that this tribute celebrates individuals whose contributions have significantly advanced the country’s traditions and heritage.

Official representation at the event

Due to a busy schedule, Patrice Talon could not attend the ceremony in person. Instead, he was represented by Jean-Michel Abimbola, Benin’s Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture. The minister highlighted the broader impact of the government’s cultural policies, noting their role in fostering social cohesion, enhancing Benin’s global image, and reconnecting with the diaspora. This recognition comes just one day after Patrice Talon’s 68th birthday, celebrated on May 1.
