Senegal fans must self-fund world cup 2026 trip from own pockets
Senegal’s Sports Minister Khady Diène Gaye has confirmed that the government will not cover travel costs for supporters heading to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States. The decision closes the door on any official fan mobilization, leaving football enthusiasts to arrange their own journeys to cheer on the Lions.

Visa hurdles and government stance
Addressing the nation on Sud FM, Minister Gaye cited visa rejections for key supporter representatives as a key factor in the government’s decision. « Every country operates independently in such matters. This time, we cannot fund fan travel, » she stated, adding that the list of supporters initially proposed—including three supporter committee presidents—was denied entry permits.
« We will not be organizing any official fan trips from Dakar to the United States, » she declared, putting an end to speculation about state-backed travel arrangements for the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Relying on diaspora and self-funded fans
The absence of state support means Senegal’s World Cup journey will hinge on two groups: supporters living abroad and those able to finance their own travel. This shift places the responsibility squarely on individual fans, many of whom have historically relied on collective efforts to accompany the team at major tournaments.
The 2026 World Cup represents a unique challenge for Senegalese football enthusiasts, as the logistical and financial burden now falls entirely on their shoulders.
