Senegal political tensions: presidential camp fires back at Pastef leader
The presidential coalition in Senegal has strongly responded to criticisms from Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef party, describing his recent remarks as “scandalous” and “unworthy of his role as National Assembly President.”
During the inauguration of the Pastef headquarters in the holy city of Touba on Sunday evening, Sonko launched a sharp attack against President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. He accused the president of prioritizing political ambitions over national interests, pointing to the “nearly unpayable” public debt and the absence of an International Monetary Fund (IMF) program. “Senegalese citizens must understand that they are not President Faye’s priority,” Sonko declared to his supporters.
The presidential camp swiftly dismissed these claims, asserting that President Faye is “working tirelessly to improve living conditions for citizens.” The coalition also criticized Sonko’s approach, stating it “seems to favor perpetual confrontation over constructive solutions.”
The exchange highlights growing political friction in Senegal, with both sides digging into their positions ahead of critical national discussions.
