Senegal’s president terminates Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko’s mandate

In a televised address from the Republic Palace in Dakar, Oumar Samba Ba, Secretary-General of the Presidency, announced that Ousmane Sonko was no longer Prime Minister of Senegal. The move also terminates the mandates of all government members.
« By decree No. 2026-1128 of May 22, 2026, His Excellency President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye has terminated the functions of Mr. Ousmane Sonko as Prime Minister, and consequently, those of the ministers and secretaries of state serving in the government. The outgoing cabinet is now tasked with managing current affairs until a new administration is formed, » Oumar Samba Ba stated.
Tensions had been building in recent months between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, who had previously mentored the president before his 2024 election victory. Sonko, a prominent opposition figure against former President Macky Sall, had originally intended to run for office himself but ultimately endorsed Bassirou Diomaye Faye as his replacement.
Further updates will be shared as developments occur.
