Government mobilizes against seasonal flooding in Senegal

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko chaired a critical ministerial session this week to strengthen Senegal’s defenses against recurrent flooding. During the meeting, he highlighted the urgent need for coordinated action across government agencies to mitigate risks before the rainy season intensifies.

Sonko praised the proactive measures already underway by the Ministry of Water and Sanitation, including drainage system cleaning, inspection of flood control infrastructure, and deployment of emergency pumps. However, he stressed that these efforts must be reinforced with tighter inter-ministerial collaboration, particularly between the ministries of Water and Sanitation, Interior, and Civil Protection.

Immediate directives for flood preparedness

Underlining the cross-sectoral nature of flood management, the Prime Minister issued clear directives to cabinet members to:

  • Update and validate all municipal emergency response plans without delay;
  • Test early warning systems and communication channels to ensure rapid information dissemination to at-risk communities;
  • Pre-position rescue teams and equipment in high-risk zones;
  • Conduct a full-scale inter-ministerial simulation exercise by mid-June to assess readiness and response capabilities.

The government’s proactive stance reflects lessons learned from past flooding events, with Sonko emphasizing that prevention and preparedness are more cost-effective than emergency response after disasters strike. By enforcing these measures now, Senegal aims to safeguard lives, protect infrastructure, and minimize economic losses during the upcoming rainy season.

Local authorities have been tasked with ensuring that these directives are implemented at the grassroots level, with regular monitoring and reporting to the central government. The Prime Minister’s intervention signals a shift toward systematic, proactive disaster risk reduction rather than reactive crisis management.
