The elation of Stuttgart players following their C1 qualification.
VfB Stuttgart has officially punched its ticket to next season’s Champions League, securing fourth place in the Bundesliga after a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt this Saturday, May 16.
With a crucial 2-2 draw achieved on Saturday afternoon in Frankfurt, Stuttgart concluded the Bundesliga campaign in a coveted fourth position. This result earned them the final German entry into the upcoming Champions League, joining football giants Bayern, Dortmund, and Leipzig.
The battle for the fourth spot in the league was intense, with Stuttgart fending off strong challenges from Hoffenheim and Bayer Leverkusen. In their decisive encounter against Eintracht Frankfurt, Sebastian Hoeness’s squad initially took the lead with goals from Chema Andrès in the 10th minute and Nikolas Nartey just before halftime in the 45th+4 minute. However, Frankfurt mounted a comeback in the second half, with Jonathan Burkhardt converting two penalties to level the score.
Ultimately, VfB Stuttgart finished the season with an impressive 62 points. This placed them ahead of Hoffenheim, who suffered a 4-0 defeat at Mönchengladbach with 61 points, and Bayer Leverkusen, who were held to a 1-1 draw at home against Hamburg, finishing with 59 points. This remarkable achievement marks the Swabian club’s seventh qualification for Europe’s premier club competition, encompassing both the Champions League and its predecessor, the European Cup.
At the other end of the Bundesliga table, the relegation fight saw Heidenheim lose 2-0 at home to Mainz, while St. Pauli also faced defeat on their home turf against Wolfsburg, with a 3-1 scoreline. Both Heidenheim and St. Pauli, each accumulating 29 points, will now drop down to the second division. Wolfsburg, finishing 16th, faces a challenging playoff match against the third-placed team from the 2. Bundesliga, which could be Elversberg, Hannover, or Paderborn.
Meanwhile, Bayern, who had already clinched their 35th German championship title, delivered a dominant performance, thrashing Cologne 5-1. The Munich side concluded their Bundesliga season with an astonishing 122 goals, with Harry Kane contributing a remarkable 36 goals in the league (59 across all competitions), including a hat-trick against Cologne in the 10th, 13th, and 69th minutes of the match.
