A military outpost near N’Guigmi in southeastern Niger came under a brutal assault by jihadist fighters from Boko Haram on Friday morning, resulting in the deaths of nearly a dozen soldiers.
N’Guigmi: a hotspot of violence on the shores of Lake Chad
N’Guigmi, a garrison town in the Diffa region, lies at the edge of Lake Chad, a vast wetland shared by Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad. Since 2009, this area has become a stronghold for armed groups, hosting both Boko Haram and the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Residents report that the attack unfolded before dawn, with militants launching coordinated strikes against the military base. Local sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that at least ten soldiers were killed in the assault. “There were fatalities on both sides,” a local witness stated, adding that Nigerien armed forces have since launched a counteroffensive to track down the attackers.

Social media posts from residents in N’Guigmi have provided additional details, indicating that the attack claimed the lives of ten soldiers and four members of the national guard. While official confirmation remains pending, Niger’s state-run news agency acknowledged the deaths, attributing them to Boko Haram militants operating in the outskirts of the town.
