As his diplomatic tenure in the Togo draws to a close, the outgoing European Union ambassador, Gwilym Ceri Jones, held a farewell meeting with Togolese Prime Minister Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé. The high-level discussion provided an opportunity to review a partnership the diplomat described as expanding rapidly in both scope and impact.
The EU envoy was received for a farewell audience, during which he highlighted the broadening scope of cooperation between Brussels and Lomé. This expanded partnership now spans sustainable development, infrastructure, energy, governance, education, and security initiatives. The ambassador emphasized that his visit was aimed at exchanging perspectives with the Togolese head of government, assessing progress in ongoing joint efforts, and outlining priorities for future collaboration.
Investment portfolios driving economic expansion
The ambassador underscored the growing volume of European investment programs in Togo, noting a portfolio brimming with opportunities for both local and European businesses. This surge in funding is expected to fuel growth and job creation in strategic sectors such as energy, agriculture, and digital transformation.
Security and development: a unified strategy
Gwilym Ceri Jones also emphasized the deepening security cooperation between the EU and Togo, stressing its critical role in supporting development objectives. He pointed to strengthened support for Togolese armed forces, particularly in counter-terrorism efforts and maritime security initiatives.
The ambassador praised the strong ties between Togo and the EU, expressing confidence that the momentum of this partnership will continue well beyond his departure.
Long-term cooperation framework
European interventions in Togo operate under the 2021–2027 Multi-Annual Joint Programming Document, backed by a €201 million funding envelope. This framework directs investments toward three key pillars: human development and socio-economic inclusion, sustainable agro-industries and natural resource management, and fostering a stable, resilient Togolese society grounded in inclusive governance.
New tripartite mechanism to boost business climate
In June, a new tripartite cooperation framework was launched, uniting the Togolese government, the European Union delegation, and Eurocham Togo. This structured dialogue platform aims to enhance the business environment, attract more European investments, and support ongoing economic reforms in the country.
The mechanism is designed to translate cooperation into tangible outcomes: job creation, private sector growth, and structural economic transformation. Both sides view these initiatives as a testament to the strength of a partnership poised to thrive long after Ambassador Jones concludes his mission.
