As his diplomatic mission in Togo draws to a close, European Union Ambassador Gwilym Ceri Jones received a farewell audience with President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé. The meeting provided an opportunity to reflect on a partnership that has flourished in scope and impact.
The outgoing diplomat highlighted how the collaboration between Brussels and Lomé has expanded significantly during his tenure, now encompassing sustainable development, infrastructure, energy, governance, education, and security initiatives. His visit served as both a review of achievements and a forward-looking discussion with the Togolese head of state.
Investment programs gaining momentum
Jones emphasized the strengthening of European investment programs in Togo, describing a portfolio ripe with opportunities for both Togolese and European private sectors. He noted that this momentum should boost growth and employment in key industries such as energy, agriculture, and digital technology.
Security and development: an inseparable alliance
The ambassador underscored the deepening cooperation in peace and security matters, which he views as essential to any development initiative. He pointed out that the EU has bolstered its support for Togolese armed forces, not only in counterterrorism efforts but also in enhancing maritime safety.
Jones also expressed strong satisfaction with the quality of relations between Togo and the European Union, expressing confidence that this partnership will continue to strengthen beyond his departure.
DCP 2021-2027: the blueprint for cooperation
European interventions in Togo operate under the 2021-2027 Multiannual Joint Programming Document (DCP), backed by a €201 million fund. This framework channels financing into three priority areas: human development and socio-economic inclusion, sustainable agro-industries and natural resource management, and fostering a peaceful, resilient Togolese society grounded in inclusive governance.
A new tripartite mechanism to boost business climate
This cooperative momentum received a significant boost last June with the official launch of a tripartite cooperation mechanism uniting the Togolese government, the European Team, and Eurocham Togo. This permanent consultation framework aims to enhance the business environment, stimulate European investments, and support economic reforms underway in Togo.
The initiative is designed to translate cooperation into tangible outcomes: job creation, private sector growth, and structural economic transformation. Both parties view these efforts as a testament to the resilience of a partnership poised to endure beyond Ambassador Jones’ departure.
