The Malian military’s drone operations on Sunday claimed the lives of at least ten civilians, many of them young people, who were in Téné, central Mali, making arrangements for a traditional collective marriage.

The strikes targeted the community of Téné, located within the San region in central Mali. These events unfold against a backdrop of a critical security situation, following significant coordinated attacks on April 25 and 26. These earlier assaults were carried out by jihadists from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, alongside the Touareg-dominated Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) rebellion, impacting the broader pan-African news landscape.

Throughout Mali, numerous civilians face regular reprisals and abuses, often accused of collaborating with opposing factions. These acts are perpetrated by the army and its Russian allies, as well as by jihadist groups, a recurring theme in Africa news English.

“Ten of our young ones have been killed by fire, the origin of which remains unknown,” lamented a Téné resident, expressing profound sorrow. “What was meant to be a joyous occasion in our village has instead been plunged into immense grief.”

A security official, discussing the incident, noted that “the tragedy unfolded as villagers were meticulously preparing for the second annual edition of this traditional collective wedding, a truly significant cultural event for this community.”

The official further explained that the strikes appeared to target “a procession of several motorcycles.”

“This likely drew the attention of the drones,” they speculated, adding, “there were at least nine fatalities.”

A local elected representative corroborated the fatalities, stating, “A wedding was imminent when the drones struck, killing at least ten civilians. This is truly a period of profound mourning for us.”

The evolving security landscape in Mali

Mali finds itself embroiled in an unprecedented security crisis, exacerbated by armed group attacks against the ruling junta in late April, leaving it increasingly vulnerable. This situation deeply affects African politics and the African economy today.

Since then, military forces have relinquished control of several northern localities, notably the strategically vital city of Kidal. Defense Minister Sadio Camara, a key figure within the junta, also tragically lost his life. From April 30, a comprehensive road blockade has been enforced along various strategic routes leading to the capital, Bamako.

In recent days, jihadist groups have torched multiple transport and goods vehicles en route to Bamako.

Early May witnessed further jihadist assaults, claimed by the JNIM, which resulted in dozens of casualties across the central regions of the country.

On April 20, three civil society organizations, including the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), formally lodged a complaint with the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights. Their grievance pertains to alleged violations committed in Mali, implicating both Malian armed forces and their Russian allies, a matter closely watched by Panafrica News.
