As major continental summits approach, the diplomacy surrounding “blue gold” is intensifying across West Africa. The Palais de la Marina in Cotonou recently hosted a pivotal meeting between Tchad and Bénin, highlighting a shared commitment to placing water resource management at the forefront of their national development agendas.

A high-level diplomatic mission in Cotonou

The Chadian Minister of State, Tahir Hamid Nguilin, was received for an official audience by Romuald Wadagni. Acting as a special envoy, Nguilin delivered a direct message from the President of Tchad, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, outlining his nation’s aspirations for the continent’s future.

This visit is part of an extensive outreach campaign initiated by authorities in N’Djamena. By engaging with key regional leaders, Tchad aims to establish a unified vision to combat the water crisis that currently threatens economic growth and social stability throughout Africa.

N’Djamena to host the African Water Forum

The discussions focused heavily on the preparations for the upcoming African Water Forum. This international event, organized jointly by the Chadian government and the World Bank in collaboration with several multilateral financial institutions, will bring together policymakers, technical experts, and global investors.

The forum is designed as a high-level platform to address several urgent priorities:

  • Achieving universal access to clean drinking water and modern sanitation services.
  • Protecting ecosystems vulnerable to climate change, particularly the Lake Tchad basin.
  • Securing funding for large-scale hydraulic infrastructure projects across the continent.

A shared vision for sustainable resources

For Bénin, a nation already implementing significant reforms to improve basic services and manage its river systems, the Chadian initiative represents a valuable opportunity. The dialogue in Cotonou emphasizes the need for African nations to take a proactive role in co-directing financing strategies with international bodies rather than simply following external mandates.

The eventual success of the N’Djamena Forum relies on strong political mobilization. By selecting Bénin as a primary stop on this diplomatic tour, Tchad has secured the backing of an influential regional partner, amplifying Africa’s collective voice in the face of global environmental challenges.
