At Moussala, a crucial transit point in Senegal, a significant queue of trucks, stretching for nearly 15 kilometers, currently awaits clearance to enter Mali. The sheer volume of commercial vehicles has overwhelmed existing infrastructure, forcing trucks to line the roadsides and causing considerable delays for drivers navigating this vital West Africa trade route.

Daouda Singui Sarr, Director of Promotion and Assistance at the Senegalese Council of Shippers (Cosec), highlighted the multifaceted challenges. “The problems we face are numerous. Firstly, transit times are significantly increasing. And with longer transit times come additional costs that transporters must bear. For the drivers themselves, a major difficulty is the lack of adequate amenities, especially during this winter period when they are confronted with many hardships,” explained Sarr, emphasizing the impact on the African economy today.

The volume of cross-border traffic along the Dakar-Bamako axis has seen a steady rise, largely fueled by the expansion of mining operations in the region. In response to these growing demands, Cosec has already taken proactive steps by developing a substantial 15-hectare parking facility for trucks in Kidira. Now, the focus shifts to Moussala, where Cosec is actively seeking tailored solutions to alleviate the severe congestion, as detailed by Daouda Singui Sarr.

“Our counterparts in customs and border police had already anticipated this challenge. They increased personnel at this location to help accelerate the passage of trucks. The question now is, why not replicate our modern parking project from Kidira and implement it here in Moussala?” he proposed, suggesting a proven strategy for improving pan-African news and trade flow.

Emergency measures are anticipated to be put into effect over the coming weeks, developed in close collaboration with local authorities to address this critical infrastructure bottleneck impacting West Africa news and commerce.
