The Government of Burkina Faso has officially announced the termination of its diplomatic relations with the French Republic, effective Friday, June 26, 2026.
In a cabinet statement, authorities cited a comprehensive assessment of bilateral ties, emphasizing that the necessary conditions for mutual respect, reciprocal trust, and adherence to the principles of non-interference and national sovereignty are no longer met.
Key grievances leading to the decision
The Burkinabè government outlined several concerns regarding France’s current leadership:
- Persistent interference in Burkina Faso’s internal affairs, undermining its governance and stability;
- Alleged neocolonial ambitions, including active support for subversive networks and terrorist groups destabilizing the Sahel region;
- Biased narratives propagated by French media and officials, portraying Burkina Faso as an international outcast;
- Imperialist tendencies aimed at dominating the country and undermining its sovereignty.
The statement read: “Faced with these imperialist designs, Burkina Faso has chosen the path of responsibility and sovereignty.”
Preserving people-to-people bonds
While severing formal diplomatic ties, the government stressed that this decision does not affect the historical, human, cultural, and social ties between the Burkinabè and French peoples. It exclusively targets the institutional framework of state-to-state relations.
The authorities reassured foreign nationals, including French citizens, of their safety and protection under Burkinabè law, urging citizens to exercise restraint and civility toward expatriates.
Commitment to independent foreign policy
The Burkina Faso government reaffirmed its dedication to an independent foreign policy, prioritizing:
- Diversification of international partnerships;
- Strengthening South-South cooperation;
- Building balanced relations with all nations;
- Promoting peace, security, and sustainable development.
The statement concluded with an invitation to dialogue, emphasizing Burkina Faso’s openness to engaging with the international community on the basis of mutual respect, reciprocity, and sovereign equality.
