Olympique Lyonnais’ plea for a fixture adjustment was always predicated on a single, crucial condition: their successful qualification for the UEFA Champions League play-offs. To earn a spot in the prestigious Champions League group stage, Les Gones must first navigate the third preliminary round, with matches scheduled for August 4th or 5th (first leg) and August 11th or 12th (return leg). Should they advance, the ultimate hurdle, the play-offs, would follow, featuring an away leg on August 18th or 19th and the decisive home leg on August 25th or 26th.
A significant scheduling conflict arises, however, as the inaugural Ligue 1 fixture is set for August 22nd. This date falls directly between the two critical Champions League play-off encounters. It was precisely to circumvent this demanding situation that Olympique Lyonnais had formally requested a postponement of their away game against Toulouse. The club’s rationale was that a less congested calendar would substantially bolster their prospects of securing a coveted spot in the Champions League.
Furthermore, the Lyon leadership had also emphasized that Olympique Lyonnais’ participation in Europe’s premier club competition would undoubtedly yield broader benefits for French football as a whole, enhancing its profile and competitiveness.
Despite these arguments, the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), convening this Monday, ultimately rejected the request. The governing body’s primary concern was the undesirability of commencing the Ligue 1 season with a postponed fixture, especially given that the entire championship is slated for broadcast on its newly launched platform.
Barring any unforeseen alterations to the fixture list, Olympique Lyonnais, should they reach the Champions League play-offs, will face an arduous week. Their schedule would involve an intense European match, followed by a challenging Ligue 1 away trip to Toulouse, and then the crucial European return leg, all within a tight seven-day window.
