The vibrant diplomatic scene continues in Lomé, underscoring Togo’s pivotal role in addressing continental crises. Constant-Serge Bounda, the Republic of Congo’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Francophonie, and Congolese Abroad, conducted an official mission to the Togolese capital. During his visit, he was granted an audience with President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé on Thursday, July 9, 2026.

This high-level engagement represents a continuation of the regular consultations held between Lomé and Brazzaville. Discussions primarily centered on strategies for preventing and resolving conflicts, alongside fostering stability across various African sub-regions.

A pan-African alliance for security challenges

Following the significant meeting, the Congolese foreign minister highlighted the strong collaboration and shared perspectives between the two heads of state regarding critical continental matters.

“With their deep pan-Africanist commitment, His Excellency Denis Sassou N’Guesso and his brother, His Excellency Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, frequently consult on major issues impacting our continent, particularly those concerning peace and security. It was in this spirit that we were dispatched to Lomé to gather the insights of President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé on these vital subjects,” Constant-Serge Bounda affirmed.

This diplomatic initiative reaffirms the joint commitment of Togo and Congo to fortify African frameworks for dialogue and collaboration. Both capitals view this as an essential prerequisite for developing effective, homegrown responses to the numerous security and humanitarian challenges currently facing Africa.

Faure Gnassingbé’s sub-regional leadership reinforced

The selection of Lomé as the venue for these strategic consultations once again highlights President Faure Gnassingbé’s recognized leadership and expertise in peace diplomacy.

It is important to remember that the Togolese President is the designated Mediator for the African Union (AU) in efforts to resolve the ongoing crisis in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the broader Great Lakes region. This crucial facilitator status solidifies Lomé’s position as an indispensable hub for peace engineering across Africa.
